Aunt Jemima Pancake Recipe

If you’ve never heard of Aunt Jemima Pancakes before, then we’re guessing that’s because they were named after an African American woman who was hired as a housekeeper at a Georgia hotel in 1898.

She became so popular that she eventually had her own line of pancake mixes, which made her famous all over America.

The original Aunt Jemima Pancake recipe calls for baking powder, but I always opt for my favorite version, which uses baking soda instead.

The difference between these two ingredients is minimal—baking powder has more leavening power than baking soda (which means it will produce a slightly denser cake), while baking soda has a milder flavor than baking powder.

Both have different effects on baked goods, though, so if you prefer a sweeter taste or lighter texture, go ahead and use baking powder.

What Ingredients Are Needed For Aunt Jemima Pancakes?

For this recipe, you’ll need 1 cup flour, ½ teaspoon salt, 2 teaspoons sugar, 3 tablespoons shortening, ¼ cup milk, and 4 eggs.

You can also add some spices like cinnamon or nutmeg, if you’d like.

How Long Does It Take To Make Aunt Jemima Pancakes?

This one depends on how many people you want to feed.

It takes about 15 minutes to prepare everything, including cooking time.

Then you just let them sit until they reach the desired doneness.

This isn’t going to work well for large crowds, but it works great for smaller groups.

What Is The Best Way To Serve Aunt Jemima Pancakes?

My favorite method is to fry them in batches in a non-stick pan with a little bit of oil.

Once done, place them directly onto plates to keep them warm.

Serve immediately or reheat later in the microwave.

What Temperature Should The Skillet Be To Make Aunt Jemima Pancakes?

You can cook the batter at any temperature, but 300 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal.

That’s the perfect temperature for making light, airy pancakes that won’t stick to the pan.

They shouldn’t brown too quickly either, since you want to retain their tenderness.

Is There A Special Technique For Flipping Aunt Jemima Pancakes?

Yes! Here’s what I do when I’m flipping them: Place half of the pancake on top of another pancake and carefully flip both of them together using tongs.

Be careful not to move the bottom pancake around too much, or else they might tear.

How Much Butter Is Needed For Aunt Jemima Pancakes?

It really doesn’t matter how much butter you put in the mix, unless you’re trying to replicate the exact taste of Aunt Jemima Pancakes.

Just remember that less fat equals better health.

Use only enough butter to coat the bottom of the pan without leaving a lot behind.

What Type Of Syrup Pairs Best With Aunt Jemima Pancakes?

I love maple syrup for its sweetness, but sometimes I prefer honey or molasses.

These will pair perfectly with the savory flavors of the pancake itself.
