Blackstone Smash Burger Recipe

What Is The Blackstone Smash Burger?

This tasty treat has been created by Chef Jeffery Lees at The Blackstone Hotel in London.

It was originally designed as part of their ‘Smash Meal’ menu but now they serve it on its own too.

It consists of two beef patties, lettuce, tomato, cheese, onion rings, pickle slices, ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise, served between two brioche buns.

You can also add fries or salad as extras.

If you don’t have any brioche buns on hand, you could substitute it with another bun type such as a hamburger roll.

If you choose to do so, make sure you use a gluten-free bread – otherwise you might find yourself feeling a little queasy after eating one of these burgers.

You’ll need to get some fresh ingredients together ahead of time though, as the Blackstone Smash Burger is best enjoyed when freshly prepared.

To save time, try making everything in advance except for the onions which should be chopped up while the meat is being cooked.

How long does the Blackstone Smash Burger take to cook?

In order to achieve maximum flavor, we recommend cooking them under medium heat (about 400 degrees Fahrenheit) for around 5 minutes per side.

Once cooked, allow the burgers to rest before serving.

For a thicker patty, cook them longer.

For example, if your burger tends to flatten out during cooking, you could increase the temperature to high (around 500 degrees F).

However, bear in mind that this means the burger will likely stick to the pan more easily.

Is the Blackstone Smash Burger suitable for vegans?

The Blackstone Smash Burger is not vegan because it contains dairy products in the form of mayo and cheese.

However, there are plenty of other options available to satisfy even the most strict of vegans.

Vegetarians, lactose intolerant individuals and those who simply prefer to avoid animal protein altogether can opt for a vegetarian version instead.

Where Did The Blackstone Smash Burger Come From?

This particular version of the burger was made by chef Andrew Coughlin – he posted his creation on Facebook in the hopes of finding new ways to use up leftover vegetables or even fruit that had gone off.

He didn’t expect it to go viral, so much so that the post has been shared over 2 million times since being published on April 17th 2020.

Coughlin originally came up with the idea after trying to find a way to use some broccoli rabe (a type of leafy vegetable) left over from one night’s dinner.

He decided to combine the two into a simple dish to share with friends at work who were also struggling to make good use of their produce.

The result was a tasty treat that everyone enjoyed.

After seeing such a positive response to the post, he decided to put together this recipe as a more permanent solution for those nights when you feel like cooking but don’t have anything fresh in the fridge.

Who Created The Blackstone Smash Burger?

Blackstone Smash Burgers were first brought into existence by a guy named Jason Crain who was inspired to create his own version of a classic hamburger after watching a television program about McDonalds’ secret menu items.

Jason has since sold over 300,000 burgers on Kickstarter alone.

The success of these burgers led him to open up his own restaurant called “Smashburger” where he serves them alongside other creations like the Smashburger Wrap and the Smashburger Shake.

Jason’s latest creation however is the Blackstone Smash Burger which features a patty made out of ground chicken mixed with black beans and spices, served between two slices of pita bread with lettuce, tomato, onion, garlic mayo, and spicy pickles.

This unique twist on the traditional hamburger means that everyone can enjoy these tasty sandwiches without having to worry about any allergies or intolerances as the only ingredients used are safe for most people to consume.

This Blackstone Smash Burger isn’t as difficult or complicated as some other recipes out there.

It’s actually quite simple – you need to combine two different types of meat and add some fresh vegetables on top.

The final product should resemble a hamburger patty with a nice juicy center and crispy edges.

  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 4 slices of bread (torn into small pieces)
  • Ground beef (we used 80/20 ground beef which has a mixture of lean meat and fat in it)
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Cheddar cheese (shredded)
  • Butter (melted)
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Olive oil
  • Garlic powder

Equipment

  • griddle

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs Ground Beef 80/20
  • 2 Tbsp Butter
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper
  • 4 slices Cheddar Cheese
  • 4 Hamburger Buns
  • 1 Tbsp Butter Melted
  • 4 Pieces Leaf Lettuce
  • 1 Tomato sliced
  • 1/2 Red Onion peeled and slice

Instructions

  • Divide the beef into 8 balls, each about 3 oz in size. Put them in the fridge until you’re ready to cook them.
  • Preheat the griddle to medium high (approximately 400 degrees F).
  • Butter the buns and toast them for 2 minutes on the griddle before setting them aside while you prepare the beef.
  • Then, on the griddle, melt the remaining butter. To melt it, move it around. Then, in the melted butter, place 4 of the beef balls on the griddle. Then, top each with a piece of parchment paper and firmly press down with a burger press or a large spatula to smash the beef into a thin patty, discarding the parchment paper. Season the patties with the garlic salt and pepper.
  • Cook the patties for 2 minutes, or until the beef juices rise to the surface and the color changes. Then, scrape under the patty to get under the caramelized parts before flipping it. After flipping, do not smash the patties again. Cook for 1 minute more, then place a piece of cheese on half of the patties to melt. Once the cheese has melted, top each of those patties with the remaining patties that do not have cheese.
  • Then transfer those patties to a separate platter and repeat the process until all of the patties are ready.
  • Then it’s time to put your burgers together. On the bottom bun, layer lettuce, sliced tomatoes, and sliced red onions. Top with the tops of the hamburger buns and the double patty.
  • The smash burgers are then ready to eat!
