Passion Fruit Margarita Recipe

It’s no surprise that margaritas are one of the most popular drinks on the planet, but what about those made with passion fruit juice – can they be as good as their more traditional counterparts?

We’ve put together this guide so you know exactly how to make your own passion fruit margarita, including some great recipes.

What Is The Recipe For A Passion Fruit Margarita?

Passion fruit margaritas are easy to make at home.

The only thing we need to worry about when mixing these drinks is making sure all the different parts are mixed in order and that the sugar dissolves before adding it to the other ingredients.

  • 1 cup 100% agave tequila (you may substitute with any type of tequila)
  • 3/4 teaspoon lime zest
  • Juice from 1 fresh passion fruit
  • Ice

For the best results you should use freshly squeezed passion fruit juice, which has a sweeter taste compared to canned or frozen varieties.

If you don’t have access to fresh juice then you will need to dilute the mixture slightly by using water instead.

Here’s everything you need to know about preparing your passion fruit margarita below:

How Do You Make A Passion Fruit Margarita?

You will need the following ingredients – lime juice, tequila, triple sec (or Cointreau), fresh-squeezed passion fruit juice, frozen sweetened condensed milk, and ice.

You also want to add salt to taste.

The first step in making your passion fruit margarita is to combine all the liquid ingredients into a shaker or jar with an ice crusher attachment.

Next, shake well until it has become frosty and frothy.

Once the drink has been shaken, pour into a glass filled with crushed ice and garnish with slices of lime and a sprig of mint if desired.

This delicious cocktail is not only easy to make, but it tastes amazing too! Try adding some rum or whiskey instead of tequila for a different twist.

What Is The Best Passion Fruit Margarita Recipe?

If you want to get really creative with your passion fruit-based cocktail, try making an ice cream float using passion fruit syrup instead of simple syrup.

The results will blow people away! You’ll find lots of different recipes online if you search around, but here’s our take on it:

  • For the base: 1 part passion fruit juice (or fresh passion fruit puree)
  • 1 part triple sec or Cointreau
  • ½ cup crushed ice

The key thing to remember when making a passion fruit margarita is not to add too much sugar – it should taste like a sweet tangy drink with hints of citrus and vanilla.

If you use too many other flavors in there, it will just end up tasting bitter.

You don’t have to go overboard either though.

Just mix all the ingredients together in a large glass before topping off with club soda and garnishing with lime wedges.

How Do You Make A Frozen Passion Fruit Margarita?

If you want to impress friends or family at home, there are several ways to make a frozen passion fruit margarita.

You could use a juicer to produce fresh passion fruit juice, which will give you an intense burst of flavor when added to ice-cold cocktails.

However, if you don’t have a juicing machine or simply prefer not to go through all the effort of making your own drink from scratch, then it’s time to turn to the freezer aisle.

Frozen passion fruit juice is available in supermarkets everywhere, meaning that you can buy it without having to spend any money on expensive equipment.

All you need to add to it is either simple syrup or sugar to sweeten it up, depending on whether you want to keep things light and refreshing or increase its sweetness level.

To make your own frozen passion fruit margarita, combine two parts of frozen passion fruit juice (or water) with one part of simple syrup or sugar.

If you only have access to frozen passion fruit juice, then add half a cup of boiling water to thaw out the contents before mixing them together.

You should allow your cocktail to sit for around 30 seconds after adding the liquid, otherwise the mixture won’t freeze properly.

After that, stir everything together thoroughly, pour into glasses filled with crushed ice, and enjoy!

What Is In A Passion Fruit Margarita?

A passion fruit margarita contains two key ingredients: fresh passion fruit pulp and tequila.

You may also add lime or lemon slices to create something similar to an agua de jamaica cocktail.

This drink has become very popular in recent years thanks to its unique flavour profile.

Passion fruits have a fruity taste that is balanced by citrus notes, which gives it a refreshing quality that many people enjoy when sipping on them.

The combination of these two flavours creates a drink that is both sweet and tangy at the same time.

As well as being delicious, it is low-calorie too, making it a healthy choice if you want to cut down on sugar intake while still enjoying yourself.

Passions and passion fruit

Passion fruit (also known as carambola) is native to South America where it grows wild.

The fruit itself is green and round, although there are different varieties available depending on the region.

In Mexico and Central America, the fruit is commonly served sliced up with ice and sprinkled with salt before eating.

In Europe, North Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and even parts of Canada, the fruit is used instead of lemons in cooking or juicing.

They are often found canned in sauces and pickles.

Because of this, you will find passion fruit juice everywhere from supermarkets to restaurants across the world.

It comes in bottles and cans, and is usually quite expensive.

However, if you buy it in season and choose a reputable brand, you should expect to pay around $10 per 500ml bottle.

If you don’t like the idea of paying extra money for a single ingredient then it might be worth trying growing your own passion fruit plants.

You can plant seeds indoors over winter and grow them through spring into summer, after which point you can harvest the fruit.

How Do You Make A Passion Fruit Margarita With Vodka?

A passion fruit margarita might sound like something out of an exotic cocktail menu, but it really couldn’t be simpler.

You simply need fresh passion fruit puree (or frozen pulp), lime juice, sugar syrup or agave syrup, and either vodka or tequila.

The key here is using only 100% neutral spirits when making your drink.

You should also use freshly squeezed limes if possible, otherwise you will lose the vibrant citrusy taste that makes these cocktails so special.

If you don’t want to buy any alcohol, then you could always try making your own at home by blending up some ripe passion fruits instead.

The amount of each ingredient matters too, because while we love the idea of adding all sorts of interesting flavors into our drinks, you don’t necessarily want them drowning out the main ingredients.

A passion fruit margarita is best enjoyed neat, which means you shouldn’t add too much sugar or other sweeteners since they might overpower the natural flavor of the fruit.

Also, keep it simple when choosing your liquor – both vodka and tequila work well in this type of mixed drink.

  • 1/4 cup fresh passion fruit puree or 1/8 cup frozen passion fruit puree
  • Juice from 3-5 limes (depending upon size)
  • Sugar syrup or agave syrup, such as Trader Joe’s Agave Nectar
  • 100 percent neutral spirit (vodka or gin would be fine)

Start off by combining the passion fruit puree and lime juice in a large pitcher.

Stir until thoroughly combined.

Next, pour the passion fruit mixture through a sieve to remove any seeds or fibrous matter before straining again.

If you have access to a blender, combine the passion fruit puree with the lime juice first, then blend everything together.

Otherwise, combine the two liquids in a bowl and whisk vigorously until smooth.

To create a sugar syrup, place equal parts water and white granulated sugar in a saucepan over medium heat.

Cook until the sugar dissolves completely, stirring occasionally.

Remove from the heat, then stir in 2 tablespoons of lemon juice.

Keep warm until needed.

Pour the syrup into another container and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Alternatively, make your own agave nectar by placing 4 cups of water, 2 teaspoons of raw honey, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract in a small pot.

Bring to a boil, reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 5 minutes.

Strain the liquid and discard the solids.

Combine the sugar syrup, cooled passion fruit puree, and vodka in a shaker filled halfway full with ice cubes.

Shake hard for 10 seconds, then strain into a chilled martini glass.

Garnish with slices of lime and serve immediately.

For a classic Margaritaville experience, replace the passion fruit puree with pineapple juice, and add extra rum for an even better result.

Try serving this concoction with a sprig of mint instead of lime wedges, or garnishing with crushed strawberries or edible flowers for an added touch of color.

What Is The Perfect Passion Fruit Margarita Recipe?

The classic margarita has been around since the 1960s when it was first created in Mexico by Don The Beachcomber, owner of the famous Tiki Bar at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

He invented the drink using tequila, Cointreau (a sweet orange liqueur), triple sec (an orange-flavored liquor) and fresh lime juice.

But if you want something different, why not try making your own passion fruit margarita instead? Here’s our guide to creating your very own version.

You might think that passion fruit margaritas would taste like a fruity cocktail, or even worse, sour.

But passion fruit juice tastes nothing like either of these things.

In fact, its flavor profile is closer to cranberry juice, which makes sense considering it comes from the same family of fruits.

If you prefer to use vodka, then we have another easy margarita recipe here.

If you don’t care for alcohol, though, check out our guide to non-alcoholic cocktails instead.

How Do You Make A Passion Fruit Margarita Without Alcohol?

There are many different ways in which you could go about making a passion fruit margarita.

You could use fresh passion fruits or frozen ones.

The important thing is that you don’t want them too ripe because if they’re overripe then it will take longer for the flavor to develop properly.

So, check out our guide on how to freeze passion fruit and get yourself some.

You may also choose to buy an already-made passion fruit syrup.

These are available from online retailers such as Amazon, though we would recommend using freshly squeezed passion fruits instead.

If you decide to go down the latter route, then all you need is some simple equipment.

A large pot (or even a stockpot) is ideal.

Next up, you should have at least two cups of water, while you might also consider adding ice cubes to increase the temperature further still.

The next step is to add lime zest to taste, followed by sugar until the mixture reaches desired sweetness.

Finally, squeeze in the juice of three limes before straining through a fine sieve into a chilled glass, along with the juice from half a passion fruit.

Passing the time with a passion fruit margarita

To top off the cocktail, you could either serve it straight away or chill it for later consumption.

If you decide to pour it straight away, then simply stir it well before serving.

Alternatively, you could shake the drink thoroughly first before pouring, allowing the sugar to dissolve completely and preventing any unsightly crystals forming.

Another option is to let the drink sit for around 15 minutes before serving, during which time the flavors meld together perfectly.

Now, here’s where things start to become a little tricky…

Is There A Difference Between A Passion Fruit Margarita And A Regular Margarita?

If you’re looking for something different from the usual tequila-based cocktail, then it might be worth checking out these tasty alternatives.

A passion fruit margarita uses either fresh or frozen passion fruit puree in place of lime juice, and instead of using tequila, it includes 100% agave nectar (also known as agave syrup).

The resulting drink has an intense tropical taste thanks to the zesty flavor of the passion fruit.

If you want to add even more interest to your passion fruit margarita, try adding a little cinnamon stick or cardamom pod while blending up the mixture.

For example, if you’d like to create a spicy version, blend equal parts of fresh passion fruit puree and water before straining the pulp through cheesecloth into your glass.

Add 1/3 teaspoon ground cinnamon and a pinch of ground cardamom prior to serving.

Another way to spice things up is by adding crushed ice to your mix.

For a sweeter option, stir in 1 tablespoon honey after straining the pulp, which will result in a slightly thicker consistency.

There are also plenty of variations when it comes to garnishes, such as strawberries or mint leaves, depending on your preference.

If you don’t have access to fresh passion fruits, there’s nothing stopping you from making a perfectly decent passion fruit margarita with canned fruit purée.

Simply drain off any excess liquid before mixing the pulp with the rest of the ingredients.
