Taco Bell Crunchwrap Recipe

If you’re looking for something different to eat on your next trip to Taco Bell, then you may want to try out their Crunch Wrap Supreme.

What’s In A Taco Bell Crunchwrap?

Crunch Wipes are the latest addition to the ever-growing menu at Taco Bell, but how exactly does one go about making them?

Well, it starts with a base of seasoned ground beef that gets topped off with shredded cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes, lettuce, tomato sauce, and even some sour cream.

The result is a delicious combination of flavors that will leave you wanting more after just one bite.

If you haven’t tried this new creation yet, here’s what you need to know before you start cooking up a batch for yourself.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef (preferably 80/20) (or 1 package of ground beef)
  • 6 ounces mild or extra sharp cheddar cheese, grated or shredded
  • 4 ounce can chopped green chilies (diced if you prefer)
  • 1 cup diced fresh tomatoes
  • ¼ cup canned diced tomatoes
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ⅛teaspoon black pepper
  • ⅛teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¾ cup Mexican style hot sauce
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 8 corn tortillas
  • 2 cups iceberg lettuce leaves
  • ¼ cup finely sliced scallions
  • ½ cup guacamole
  • ½ cup pico de gallo

Preparation

First thing’s first – get your ingredients prepared!

This means taking your ground beef and mixing it together with your seasonings so that they become evenly distributed throughout the meat.

Next, set aside ½ cup of the cooked ground beef to use as the filling for the tacos later on.

Now that everything has been mixed well, let’s move onto the actual wrapping process.

To begin with, take two separate bowls and mix together the shredded cheddar cheese and diced tomatoes separately.

Then take each bowl and add half of the contents from both into a large mixing bowl.

Next, combine the remaining ingredients except for the tortillas and mix thoroughly to create an excellent flavor combo.

Once that’s done, heat up 2 tablespoons of butter in a frying pan over medium heat until melted, and then pour in the contents of the mixing bowl.

Stir continuously while heating until the entire mixture turns golden brown.

Remove the pan from the stovetop once the mixture cools down slightly.

Once cooled down, spoon the mixture into a Ziploc baggie and seal tightly.

Take a clean kitchen towel and wrap around the baggy to form a tight ball shape.

Now place the finished product directly on top of another clean kitchen towel which should be folded over itself several times to ensure a smooth surface when rolling out the dough.

Make sure not to squeeze too hard on the towel since the tortillas need to remain pliable.

Then roll out the towel using a circular motion until you have a circle approximately 6 inches in diameter.

While doing this, keep in mind that you don’t want the center of the circle to be thicker than the outer edges.

When complete, turn the towel inside out and carefully remove the tortilla from its wrapper.

Place the rolled out tortilla flat on the countertop and repeat the same process for every other tortilla.

When you finish rolling out all eight tortillas, stack them up vertically on a plate.

Cover the stack with plastic wrap and refrigerate until needed.

How Do You Make A Taco Bell Crunchwrap?

The first step of making a taco bell crunch wrap is to purchase some ingredients.

You will need a few things like :

  • 1 pound of lean ground beef
  • 1/4 cup shredded cheddar jack cheese
  • 1/3 cup of red onion
  • 2 tablespoons of green chile sauce
  • a dash of garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • Fresh lime juice.

To start off with, chop up your onions and grate your cheese into small pieces.

Now that those items are prepared, it’s time to get started making your own taco bell crunch wrap!

To make this at home, simply take one large flour tortilla (about 8 inches) and place it directly onto a medium-hot grill over direct heat.

Once the tortilla has become slightly charred, add about ½ ounce of your ground beef mixture to the center of the tortilla so that it covers approximately two thirds of the surface area of the tortilla.

Then, sprinkle a quarter of an ounce of the grated cheese evenly across the top half of the meat mixture.

Next, spread about a tablespoon each of the red onion and green chile sauce across the bottom third of the meat mixture.

Finally, squeeze a little bit of lime juice down the middle of the wrap before placing another tortilla on top.

Press both of the outer edges together firmly and let cook until warmed through completely.

What’s The Best Way To Eat A Taco Bell Crunchwrap?

The Crunch Wrap Supreme was introduced in 2014 as one of Taco Bell’s newest menu items.

There are several ways that you can prepare this tasty treat at home.

You could go with an open-faced sandwich style or a closed wrap like I did below.

(Note: If you don’t have access to fresh ingredients, you might be able to find premade taco seasoning mix instead.)

  • Crispy Tostitos® chips (available at most grocery stores)
  • Tortillas
  • Ground beef
  • Shredded Mexican blend cheese (or shredded Cheddar cheese)
  • Sour cream
  • Chili sauce
  • Tomato salsa
  • Chopped green onion
  • Diced avocado (optional)

To start off, heat three tablespoons of oil over medium heat in a pan.

Once it begins to shimmer, add half of the meat mixture into the pan.

Using two forks, break apart any large pieces of meat and stir them around until they begin to brown.

Add more oil if needed.

Once the meat starts to get crispy, remove from the heat and set aside.

Repeat this process with the other half of the meat mixture.

Next, spread the bottom half of each tortilla with some chili sauce before topping them with the remaining meat mixture.

Spread some chopped green onions on top of the meat mixture.

Next, layer the sour cream, cheese, and tomato salsa onto each tortilla.

Top the entire stack with another layer of chili sauce.

Finally, top each with about 1/4 cup of chopped green onions before wrapping them tightly in foil.

Place the wraps directly into a 350 degree Fahrenheit oven for 8 minutes.

Remove the foil and let sit for 2 additional minutes before serving warm.

A better choice than a burrito bowl

While the Crunch Wrap Supreme isn’t exactly healthy, it does offer a healthier alternative to traditional fast food fare such as tacos, burritos, and quesadillas.

The fact that this dish only contains 500 calories per meal makes it even easier to stay on track while eating out.

How Many Calories Are In A Taco Bell Crunchwrap?

Calories per serving (cal): 450

  • Fat grams per serving (g): 5
  • Carbs per serving (g): 70
  • Protein per serving (g): 20
  • Sodium per serving (mg): 700

The average meal at Taco Bell contains approximately 449 calories and 17 grams of fat.

The amount of sodium in one Crunch Wrap Supreme is about 1,000 milligrams – which might be too much if you have high blood pressure or kidney problems.

Is A Taco Bell Crunchwrap Healthy?

The answer to this question depends entirely on what you mean by “healthy.”

If we define health as simply being free from disease or illness, then yes, a taco bell crunchwrap is perfectly healthy.

However, if you take into account that most people associate “health” with having enough energy to do the things they love (such as getting through life without serious medical complications), then no, there is not much wrong with them at all.

In fact, these wraps contain more protein than any other menu item at Taco Bell.

They also have fewer carbs than any other food option on the menu.

And unlike some of the other foods available at Taco Bell, it doesn’t matter whether you order one wrap or two.

Each will still be relatively low in calories.

If you’re concerned about how many calories are in a taco bell crunchwrap, just remember that you can always make your own wraps using whole-wheat flour tortillas instead of those made from corn.

You could even cut down on the amount of meat used and add vegetables like tomatoes or lettuce to give yourself an extra serving of veggies while keeping the calorie count lower.

What Is The Origin Of The Taco Bell Crunchwrap?

The taco bell crunch wrap was introduced in 1996 as part of a new menu item called “CrunchWrap Supremes.”

They are made with seasoned lean ground beef, shredded cheddar, lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream that are rolled into a soft flour tortilla and served hot or cold.

In addition to being an excellent choice if you need some variety when eating at Taco Bell, these wraps also have many health benefits.

For example, they contain low-fat ingredients like ground beef instead of fatty meat.

And because they are made from whole grain products, they can help reduce blood sugar levels after meals.

You can find them sold frozen, but most people prefer to make them fresh themselves using this easy recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 cup onion, chopped
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups grated cheddar cheese (about 8 ounces)
  • 8 corn tortillas, cut into strips 1 inch wide by 12 inches long
  • Sour cream
  • Lettuce
  • Tomatoes

Directions :

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Cook onions in 2 tablespoons butter until tender, about 5 minutes.
  • Add meat and seasonings to pan, cook over medium heat 3 to 4 minutes or until no longer pink, breaking up meat as it cooks.
  • Transfer mixture to bowl; add remaining 1 tablespoon butter and mix well. Place half of meat mixture in each of four greased baking sheets.
  • Bake 10 minutes, turn pieces carefully with spatula, return to oven and bake another 15 minutes, turning again halfway through cooking time. Remove from pans and place in paper bags to cool completely before wrapping.
  • Combine cheeses in small saucepan. Bring to boil, stirring constantly until melted. Pour cheese onto center of each cooled meat mixture.
  • Lay one piece of tortilla on work surface. Spread half of meat mixture across middle of tortilla, leaving sides clear. Top with half of tomatoes, followed by half of lettuce and half of sour cream. Fold bottom edge of tortilla up over filling, fold side edges down to enclose filling, roll tightly, and secure closed with toothpick.
  • Place seam side down on plate and repeat steps with remaining three tortillas and filling ingredients.
  • Sprinkle tops of wraps with additional salt and serve immediately.

How Can I Make A Vegan Taco Bell Crunchwrap?

This recipe will show you how to create a vegan version of this popular menu item at Taco Bell. You’ll need a few things to start off with.

They include:

  • Ground Beef (You can use any kind of meat that you like)
  • Cheese (Any type of cheese would work here)
  • Sour Cream
  • Tortillas
  • Tomato Salsa
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Flatbread or Bread Chips

Step 1 – Preparing Your Ingredients

  • First, take your ground beef and form it into a ball. Next, put it back onto its side so that you can roll it around until it forms a nice cylinder-like shape. Slice open each end of the beef cylinder so that they look more like tacos. Then place them inside a bowl where you’ve mixed together salt, pepper, tomato sauce, and sour cream. Add one tablespoon of each per taco shell as well.

Step 2 – Filling The Shells With Meat And Cheese

  • Next, simply spoon the filling into each taco shell. If you don’t have enough filling, you could always add extra ingredients such as lettuce or onions if desired.

Step 3 – Creating A Wrapping Layer

  • Now that you’ve filled each taco shell, you’ll need to cover up the contents by creating a wrapping layer. Take flat bread chips and dip each chip into oil to prevent sticking. Once you’ve done that, just lay one piece of flat bread over top of each taco. Now, using both hands, tightly wrap the flat bread around each taco. Be careful not to squeeze too hard because you don’t want the filling to leak out during cooking.

Step 4 – Cooking The Taco Bell Crunchwrap

After placing the wraps in an oven safe dish, heat them up until the edges begin to curl slightly.

Remove from the oven and serve immediately!

What Are Some Common Mistakes People Make When Making A Taco Bell Crunchwrap

Sometimes, it seems like everyone who tries out the taco bell crunch wrap ends up with problems while trying to perfect this delicious treat.

And that’s because there are many things you need to keep in mind if you plan on making one of these at home.

Here are just a few tips that will help you avoid any frustration along the way.

  • Don’t use too much sauce or dressing on top of the filling! If you have extra sauce or dressing, don’t add more than what is called for in the recipe. Otherwise, you risk having soggy lettuce as well as excess liquid seeping into the wrap itself.
  • Make sure you buy a fresh tortilla (not frozen) so that the wrap doesn’t get mushy during cooking. And lastly, make sure you put enough meat inside your crunch wrap so that it isn’t dry!
