In a pan, heat the oil to medium-high. the seeds of cumin. Allow to cook and sizzle (takes about 2-3 minutes). Add asafetida next (hing).
Put onions in the pan. Cook for 2 minutes. Add the minced garlic.
Add salt, turmeric, and turnips. Mix.
Alternate between low and medium gas.Add 6 tbsp of water.Cook for 5 minutes while covered. 1-2 times, checking to mix each time (particularly if you're not using a non-stick pan).
Turnips should be fork tender. Add remaining spices and crushed tomatoes. Mix well.
Let cook 2 more minutes. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve.
