Milk and sugar should be slowly heated in a saucepan while being stirred often. Add the cornflour just before it begins to boil. Cook while stirring continually until it becomes extremely thick, then turn off the heat and, to taste, add vanilla and orange or rosewater. Pour into ramekins or tiny glasses, then let cool.
After they have cooled, cover them and place them in the fridge for at least three hours to set.
Add some crushed pistachios and rose petals just before serving for some more color, if you prefer.
