Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 TB baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 6 TB lard or shortening
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  • Set the oven to 400°F and butter a large (10-inch) baking ") cast-iron frying pan
  • The dry components must be mixed. Use a fork or pastry blender to mix in the shortening until you have fine crumbs. Blend in the buttermilk until well-combined.
  • Put your skillet on the burner to a simmer. While that's happening, spread out the dough into a circle about 9 inches in diameter on a floured surface "wide (a bit smaller than your skillet)
  • Place in your hot, oiled skillet and cook over a medium-low heat for about 5 minutes on each side.
  • After that, place the entire assembly in the oven and bake for about 15 minutes.
